Gabriella Boyd

Gabriella Boyd focuses on a merging of private and public spaces. Tight theatrical settings invite the viewers exploration of the space leaving the private emotions of the characters in the full glare of exposure. Building up these imagined locations in painted layers she pushes the boundaries of perceived space with no clear direction of where they will ultimately end. These layers could represent different frames of time or simply separate spaces within the pictorial frame. Characters similarly exist on separate planes, presented in different states of mind and in different ways of being. Through this process there evolves a tension between figures and objects as well as between the figures – a narrative without resolution is implied. Boyd’s paintings stand between the light and playful and something more disturbing.  Melancholic or erotic undercurrents are balanced with an overt playfulness presented through bold pattern and colours.
